Agenda 2030 Career Day for Early-Career Researchers

Invest in building relationships and remember that opportunities are linked to people, be digitally searchable, remember that your skills are your ticket to the interview and once there, the social aspect is important, surround yourself with good people and ensure a work-life balance.

These were some of the many tips and advice given to Agenda 2030 PhD students and postdocs at a career day on Monday in the new learning environment Teknodromen at Lund University. And our first Agenda 2030 alumnus, Soo-Hyun Lee, contributed online from Japan with his exciting career in both academia and the UN. Thank you to all speakers and participants for an inspiring day!

Fun, eco-friendly or functional - why travellers want to try new, green modes of transport

Agenda 2030 PhD student Phil Flores' thesis provides answers to what motivates people to use new modes of transport that are marketed as environmentally friendly. For many people, shared electric scooters and bicycles are primarily used because they contribute to positive emotions – it's fun.

Agenda 2030 PhD student Alezini Loxa researched sustainability in EU migration law. Her study revealed a legal system with very specific characteristics where the rights of migrants are closely linked to their economic contribution to the EU market.

PhD Conference on Sustainable Development

We had an exciting day at our 3rd PhD Conference on Sustainable Development on 29 September! The conference started off with a welcome from Kristina Jönsson, coordinator of the Agenda 2030 Graduate School and followed by inspirational presentations given by Thomas Hickmann (associate senior lecturer at Political Science) and Magdalena Bexell (Associate professor at Political Science) who shed light on the current state of the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

It was a day of research presentations, workshops, poster presentations, stimulating discussions and networking.

Recycled wastewater reaches lake water quality

How do we get enough water when climate change leads to heat waves, droughts and other extreme weather events? Reusing wastewater is one option. Agenda 2030 PhD student Maria Takman's research shows how a treatment method that is currently being evaluated in Scania results in lakewater quality wastewater. At the same time, the study highlights the need for both more knowledge about wastewater treatment processes and new legislation.

Two new dissertations this autumn

In the coming month of October, we look forward to the thesis defences of two Agenda 2030 doctoral candidates. Alezini Loxa, from Lund University's Faculty of Law, will defend her thesis entitled 'Sustainability and EU Migration Law: What Place for Migrants' Rights?" on 5 October.

On 13 October, Phil Flores from the Department of Business Administration, who is also a member of the Agenda 2030 Research School, will present his thesis entitled 'Not all Green Innovations are Created Equal: Consumer innovativeness and motivations in the adoption of shared micromobility'. These upcoming defences mark important milestones in their academic journeys and promise to bring valuable insights to their respective fields.

Reduced Environmental Impact and Lower Cost with Reusable Textiles in Healthcare Settings

Linn Hemberg, a PhD student at the Department of Clinical Science in Lund, Division of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, has investigated the environmental and climate impact of items used for central venous catheter (CVC) insertions. The study is now published in Springer Nature.

Soo-hyun Lee was the first to defend

Soo-hyun Lee has studied on three continents, worked for a handful of UN organizations, consulted for mega-corporations, and run his own business. He is the first PhD student to graduate from the Agenda 2030 Graduate School. It all started in South Korea, where his mother was a toy inventor, but a large American corporation stole her successful idea.
"I spent many hours in court as a child. It was not easy for an Asian woman to litigate against a large American corporation," says Soo-hyun Lee, who later chose to pursue law.

Timothée Parrique is the winner of the Lund University Agenda 2030 Award

The prize aims to promote innovative, interdisciplinary research on sustainable development by early career researchers. The prize, worth SEK 25 000, is awarded annually by the graduate school Agenda 2030 in collaboration with the company Elis Textil Service AB.
"It is a great pleasure to announce that Timothée Parrique is the winner of the Agenda 2030 Award 2023 for his pioneering work starting with his PhD thesis, The Political economy of degrowth. The thesis breaks new ground in a fast-expanding literature, which was only marginal when he started his thesis work. He manages to draw on an impressive blend of intellectual traditions in his comprehensive thesis. Since his thesis defense, he has spent considerable efforts to make his work accessible to a wider audience through social media and by turning the thesis into a widely cited report and a book that is currently translated into several languages. A truly impressive achievement", says Kristina Jönsson, the Agenda 2030 Graduate School coordinator.

Two honorary mentions are announced to Kajsa Emilsson from the Lund University School of Social Work and to Johan Kjellberg Jensen, Centre for Environmental and Climate Science at Lund University.

3rd PhD Conference on Sustainable Development

29 September 2023, on campus 

The Lund University PhD Conference on Sustainable Development is an opportunity to encourage interdisciplinary cooperation in order to further academic research on all aspects of sustainability. The Agenda 2030 Graduate School hosts the conference, which will showcase ongoing research and offer a networking opportunity for PhD students with similar interests in sustainable development, the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The deadline for submissions of proposals is 15 August.
About the PhD Conference

ALL MY RELATIONS 2; Ecological co-learning, Existential Sustainability, and Transformative Performance Practices

1-3 September 2023, Gylleboverket, Simrishamn

The purpose of this event is to study the possibilities and limitations of performative arrangements to foster individual and collective transformation and aim at a more sustainable life. We seek to find the link between performative practices and ecological sustainability based on a genuine understanding of sensibility, corporality, imagination, being-with and a movement towards an extended ecological self. 

The workshop is addressed to artists, researchers, and pedagogues dealing with ecology, non-human relations, and sustainable futures. The workshop is co-arranged by Malmö Theatre Academy and the Agenda 2030 Graduate School.
